The New York Yankees have been shaking up their roster Sunday, making a number of moves. After trading Vidal Nuno for Brandon McCarthy earlier in the morning, Brian Cashman followed that up by designating Alfonso Soriano for assignment.

Soriano will be released to clear a roster spot for the 28-year old Bruce Billings. After coming over from the Chicago Cubs last season, Soriano had been an RBI machine to finish off 2013 and to start this season, but like the rest of the Yankees offense has cooled off considerably and not maintained the production.

Soriano was slashing .221/.244/.367 with six home runs and 23 RBI in 226 at-bats. It should not be hard for Soriano to find a new team, as the trade deadline is approaching and teams that miss out on desired targets would take a look at the veteran slugger. He would be a valuable piece off the bench for a contending team in any league, and could still offer some value as a platoon DH in the American League.
